Link-Layer Adaptation for Wireless Data Networks

Abstract

The objective of this project is to improve the design of link layer retransmission protocols for wireless packet data communications. This work builds upon our past collaboratie work on iterative (turbo) equalization for EDGE. In order to reduce the amount of training overhead needed for the adaptive equalizer, we have applied reduced- rank estimation techniques. These techniques can also simplify the equalizer. We have also extended these algorithms to space-time equalization and equalization of multi-input/multi-output channels, which correspond to multiple transmit and receive antennas. Simulation results show that with limited training, the reduced-rank equalizer can offer a substantial performance improvement relative to the conventional (full-rank) equalizer.
